Our School

About Us
Hulan Whitson Elementary School is a kindergarten through 4th grade school with approximately 500 students.  Our building is a Schoolwide Title 1 Program-- where federal funds are used to support high quality education for all students.  The emphasis is child-centered with a teacher-facilitated approach
to learning.

Our Vision
Whitson Elementary School follows developmentally appropriate practices.  This creates a child-centered environment which encourages children to develop
the knowledge, skills and attitude that are the foundation for becoming life-long learners and contributing members of the world community.

Our Common Focus: Increasing Literacy
We are committed to bringing all students to grade level in reading and writing across all curriculum
areas through the use of a research-based literacy model.  Our goals if for all students to meet the state standards in reading, writing, and mathematics on
Washington State's Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) formerly known as the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).  We want our students to see themselves as capable learners and to believe in themselves enough to try new things without fear.

Whitson’s schedule reflects this literacy commitment with students receiving a 120-minute reading block each day. Whitson Elementary was the recipient of a three-year federal Reading First grant. The grant funds a full-time reading coach, a comprehensive core reading curriculum (Trophies), supplemental and intervention reading materials and professional development for all staff.

Our Staff
Whitson Elementary prides itself on the excellence of its diverse faculty.  Our teachers average 14 years of teaching experience, and over 80% of our faculty hold a master's degree or higher.
